Canarie 8th Annual Advanced Networks Workshop
Montreal, Canada - November 18 to 20, 2002
Description
We are embarking on the third wave of the Internet revolution.
This next wave promises to revolutionize the way we perceive and use the Internet and will create exciting new opportunities for Canadian industry, research, education, health and government services.
The first wave of the Internet consisted primarily of text and data services such as e-mail and FTP.
The second wave was the web which improved ease of use and facilitated the transfer of images, sound and video.
The new, exciting third wave is the integration of applications and high speed networks into a new paradigm often referred to as "Web Services" or the "Semantic Web".
To date "Web Services" has largely been associated with the hype around various vendors implementations (eg. Microsoft's .Net, IBM's Websphere, SUN's ONE architecture, etc).
But the third wave is more than business to business web services as typified by these initiatives. It embraces and extends the web services paradigm to much wider field of applications such as next generation grids, optical network management systems, next generation learning object repositories, and much, much more. It also incorporate transformative developments such as open source software, peer to peer services and information commons for new models of intellectual property.
CANARIE's 8th annual workshop will focus on how this encompassing vision of web services, combined with high speed networks such as CA*Net 4 will enable a new third wave of Internet applications and services.
As in past CANARIE Advanced Network Workshops, there will also be presentations and updates form other international networks, advanced applications and broadband initiatives.
Canarie a signatory of the IST-EC contract is organizing this IST-EC Dissemination event. DFAIT as the Canadian Co-ordinator is planning to attend this workshop to disseminate information on IST-EC.
The Canarie workshop will focus on how this encompassing vision of web services, combined with high speed networks such as CA*Net 4 will enable a new third wave of Internet applications and services.
The conference is expected to attract upwards of 1000 participants from all across Canada and will offer an excellent opportunity for Canadian researchers in the ICT domain to learn more about IST-EC and the opportunities for partnering with Europeans in research and development.
